My 16 year old's project car is a 1980 Volvo 242, 2.1L gas, not turbo. We have gone through the whole car and it looks great. Problem is that it lacks power on an intermittent basis. Idles fine, starts fine but on take off and while traveling at normal speed it definitely lacks power. Some times it seems to "kick in" and runs with great power. It doesn't really run rough when lacking power but we can really tell when it's "in the groove". We notice that when it's running best it idles at 1,100 RPM and when it's lacking power it idles at about 800 RPM. On occasion the car does run rough and seems to surge/jump when taking off from a start.
In the process of fixing the car and getting it smogged (no easy feat) we replaced all the fuel injectors, spark plugs, fuel filter (on firewall), fuel pump (didn't replace the canister lying next to fuel pump), vacuum lines, distributor cap, coil and rotor. We also replaced the pressure plate and clutch and clutch cable. The car finally ran well enough to pass smog after we replaced the fuel pump with a Bosche but now it is not running at 100%. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Ron
