Voltage meter going haywire

A while ago i had the alternator on my Laredo refurbished.
Now the lights go high randomly, and the voltage meter goes up to 19 when it happens also when it goes to 0 the lights turn off, the radio shuts down and sometimes my jeep dies. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the alternator is the issue, verify this by having an auto parts store test it. Most likely it can be checked while on the vehicle.

I did a quick check on the alternator by removing the negative cable from the battery while the vehicle was on to see if it shot off, but it stayed on. Also, when the battery dies I jump start it and it works okay. I will be taking it to get it check at the auto parts store.

Removing the battery cable while it runs is the very worst thing you could have done!

Way back, you could do that. When you tried that on a 1960's- through 1970's and early 1980's vehicle you "might" muff up the voltage regulator, but what the heck, a whole alternator for an average vehicle might cost $35.00 back then. A whole bunch cheaper than a computer!

Maybe you have not done damage or compounded your issue.

The alternator may still keep it running (doing it the wrong way) but it may be over charging and giving Mr. Computer too much voltage. Over charging may also damage the battery or even make it explode!

I went to get the charging system checked. The alternator and voltage regulator are good, they said. The battery, however, was bad. I got a new battery, no problems so far. I will know more tomorrow when I drive to work and see what happens. I still get code 12 and 41 in my diagnostic codes.
