I feel and hear a cluncking somewhere in the steering when I turn the wheel what should I be looking for what needs to be done to repair it.

I think I am answering this question now twice, your diagnosis is correct, the sound you're hearing is your front axles, today they are called CV joints (Centrifugal Velocity joints), in other words like you stated "In the old days this would be a broken universal joint" the axles are a little difficult to replace, if you want to attempt it, I will help you, let me know
