Hi
i have a 1998 R reg 1.4L VW Polo, its done approx 109000 miles, i bought i in december from a dealership and afetr about a month the temp/coolant light came on and i topped up the coolant and everything was fine for about another month so did the same and again all was ok. Yesterday i was driving to work, i did about 8-10 miles and the engine temp started to climb very quickly and went to roughly 110degrees, i quickly pulled into a garage and bought some coolant, i undid the coolant cap and the water shot out and there was steam everywhere, i put the coolant in and continued to work, afetr another mile or so the temp again shot up, i pulled over and let teh engine cool down then drove to work with the hot air blowers on and it maintained normal working temperatuer. The following morning when i was driving home from work i kept the hot air blower on and the temp was fine but as soon as turned the blowers off the temp started creeping up again. Ive had my mechanic friend look at it and he thinks its the head gasket, due to the water bubbling up, very hot pipes very quickly and very hard/pressurised pipes. The engine can function perfectly in all gears and there is no white smoke from my exhaust. What could this be, i have minimal knowledge of cars so im at the mercy of my friend, he will repair whatever it is and will not charge for labour, only for parts, but im still worried at the costs.

have your friend do a compression test of cylinders to check for headgasket failure ..
