Electrical problem
2002 Volkswagen Passat Front Wheel Drive Automatic 108000 miles

Hello,

My car went to the mechanics 3 weeks ago, they said that my loss of power issues were related to my timing belt, tensioner and so on. I received my car and two weeks latter my EPC light is intermittently coming on. It just stops moving two days after making my appointment.
My mechanic is telling me that my belt is on backwards, and they didn't touch my timing belt three weeks before when they came in. Is it possible that my car could have been driving on a backwards timing belt for over five months (when I bought that car) and would this explain why I have have to replace my alternator now?

I feel like I am being worked, since I do know a very tiny bit about engines and that the timing belt has teeth and if they are not the right way it will cause slipping, your engine wont run and your alternators don't charge.

Can you shed any light?

I have never heard of such a thing. It is people like this that give us in the repair industry a bad name.
