2000 Volkswagen Passat

Please somebody knowledgeable reply as I have the same problem, but I do have a noticeable oil leak on the slab. Thank you.

What engine (size/type) is in your car?

My passat is a 2000 model, 1.8 Turbo, 4-cyl. The engine is an ATW. Thank you.

Common oil leak areas are:

- valve cover gasket & chain tensioner gasket
- oil cooler seal
- oil pressure switch
- camshaft or crankshaft seals

You will need to do a visual inspection to see where the oil is coming from. Repair shops use a dye that they put in the oil so that fresh leaks can be found via UV Light.

The first in my list is the most common... the PCV system needs to also be checked for correct operation, or the new gasket kits will fail early.

It shouldn't take a shop long to find a leak and they usually don't charge for the inspection if you end up getting the work done by them.

If you end up doing the repair yourself, they might charge you for the inspection.

Forgot to mention cracked oil pan... also common, but since you didn't mention
hitting anything, the oil pan is probably OK.

Looks like my work is cuto out for me. I really appreciate the input and I think I will take the suggestion above to have a shop detect the leak and go from there. Thank you very much!
