1999 Volkswagen Passat Timing Belt?

I took my car to an auto mechanic about two weeks ago, and when in initially took it in he said it was most likely the timing belt. What would be a reasonable price range for the repair? I called to ask a week ago, but he said he was still waiting on one more part and he didn't know how much it would all cost.
