Hi,

I own a 1999 VW Passat (automatic transmission). The car has about 100,000 miles and it has 4 cylinders.
When my car decelerates, it makes a strange noise. The noise does not sound like a clicking or knocking noise, but the noise sounds the loudest when it decelerates to first gear. Also, I do not hear any noises when my car accelerates or does not jeak when it decelerates. Please help me diagnose my problem.

Thanks!

So it whines when it downshifts to 1st gear? Does it sound like the tires? or is it more high pitched? Does the trans do anything funny other than the noise?

Hi,

Yes, it whines whenever I downshift.

I don't think its coming from the tires because the sound is loudest when I downshift and sometimes I hear the noise when I accelerate and turn. So, the noise is generally coming from under the hood.

The noise sounds like a "rrmmmm sound" and not high pitched.

The trans doesn't do anything funny.

Thank you,
