The first thing to do is to check the transmission oil level and top up if low. Is the grinding when you try and select Drive or Reverse. Or when the automatic transmission is changing up / down gears ?

This is sounding more like a failed differential. Jack the car up and place on stands. Turn wheel the rear wheel, dose it make a noise and dose the other wheel turn backward? (that's normal) Hold one wheel, and turn the other, is there any strange noise.

I feel it is terminal but you should remove the transmission to inspect further.

after some research we found the shift lever controls the actuation of the contact points in the linkage of the shifter which is controlled by an electric switch. Which operates a vacuum clutch release lever. the electric wire to the switch was broken, caused by moving the shift lever back and forth while shifting.
