Help with Jetta 1999 2.0

I have a 1999 New Jetta 2.0 with 135246 miles. It appears to over heat and the temperature gage shoots to high and the Red water light comes on. When I look under the hood when this happens, everything looks normal. No antifreeze shooting out or anything. I turn the heat inside the car on high and the air that blows in is not hot? Do you think it’s the thermostat or the heater coil?

Sounds like a typical Thermostat issue to me.
Since they are fairly cheap replace that, and flush the system with a good flush kit and cleaner.

if your engine has at any time when it was over hot seemed to have lost power or anything like that (stalled, bogged down), you are likely always going to have issues with it after you correct the immediately obvious problem. This is because metal expands when hot, and if too hot the oil will not protect the parts inside from scraping together. Make sure to change the oil and filter right away after you change the thermostat too. Have likely cooked that oil.
