bad noise

I have a 91 passat with over 200klm, and it has just started banging or clunking when I start off and when I brake, and a little bit when I'm driving, what could this be?

Sounds like it could be motor mounts.

Either that or control arm bushing(s).

You can jack up the car and try to shake the front wheel (back and forth and up and down) to see if you feel anything loose or to see if you can hear a clunking noise.

check your wheel nuts. Sounds like they are not tight or that the holes in the wheel itself are oval.
