An unhappy cold mkii golf engine

I've got a 1.3 mkii golf 1991 (carb), done about 130k. Every morning i go start it fine (as long as i put my foot on the gas whilst i do it) but it doesn't idle! It stalls almost every time i take my foot off the gas, the revs just drop! when i see it dropping i can save it by giving it some revs but its a nightmare every time i stop! After about 10 mins when the engines warmed up its fine but until then i have to sit with my foot slightly on the gas to stop it stalling! Also when i pull away in first my revs dip quite significantly before going up again. Not sure if they're related.
