Transmission problem

i dont know what the problem is the pedel drops to the floor without any resistance. the clutch actually stopped working on the hight way wt about 70 mph. while in fifth gear the car seemed to slow down and the rpms climbed. untill i could no longer get the car into any gear what could be the problem?
