1976 Other Volkswagen Models 4 cyl

I have a 1976 type 2 bay camper van and am experiencing a knocking noise from one of the wheels. The noise is not constant and occurs randomly, different speeds, road conditions etc. The noise decreases when the clutch is depressed and knocks faster as the clutch is engaged and speed increases. I have been told that it could be a cv joint or wheel bearing, but it has just passed its MOT, so would these have been checked then?
Please help.
