2002 Volkswagen Jetta Engine vibration after replacing driv

2.8L 6 cyl, engine code BDH, 6 speed manual transmission. Replaced driver side half shaft after finding torn CV boot. Now have vibration caused by the inner joint pushing up against the end cap, forcing the engine/trans to shift sideways. Have tried three shafts with same results. I have noticed that the torque strut (dogbone) shifts sideways with the trans, does not appear to be rigid at all. Is it supposed to be? Is a defective dogbone causing the engine to sit too far to the left (driver side), causing the zero clearance for the inner joint? This is very frustrating. Is there any other possible problem that would create this condition? Motor mounts perhaps? Help!

Are these axles aftermarket, remanfactured? see if you can cross reference to VW part number should be 1JO 4907 271 FG

Two were new, aftermarket shafts, latest one is a rebuild. Length on the rebuilt matches the original. Are you saying that the shaft is wrong, not the mounts being the problem?

That was my thought wrong axle cause there are five possible. Was supplier able to cross reference to VW part no?other than overall length are splines the same length on outer CV?

Have you tried putting original back in and replace joint?

Thanks for the followup I did not measure splines, and no one in town here can cross-reference that part number. I will go to VW and get the part from them, at $500. If there is 5 different shafts, then I do not want to mess with trying to get a replacement outer joint, with my luck that would not work out either. I want the car out of the garage!
I appreciate the info, I did not realize how much of a hassle this was going to be.
I may replace the dogbone while I'm under there anyway.

I went with the part number off of the original shaft to VW, but was not happy with the prospect of paying $700 for a replacement. The parts manager took pity and referred me to an aftermarket dealer who matched up my number with a replacement for a tenth of that price. And it fit, finally! As you said, there are 5 different shafts for that car, but all of the parts stores in my little town only carried a couple of them. Apparently the 24-valve V6 with the 6-speed manual transmission is not a common application, and the original part number did not show up in their databases.
