The timing belt on my 2000 jetta went and bent a piston, still runs on 3 cyl. Any advice on whether or not it warrants fixing and if so, what I could expect to pay for repair. My mechanic says it has to be sent to a machine shop? Thanks for any input on this.

Think you bent a valve. Head needs to be removed sent to machine shop for repair. est.@ $600-$700

Valve/piston, it's all greek to me. Thanks for the response and if I could find a mechanic that would do it for that, I would be very happy. But all my quotes are much higher.

A piston would be @$2000+ but you have a bent valve that is a cheaper fix. Make sure est. is for cylinder head R&R and valve repair.

I'll check to see if it's a valve or piston. Something about "closing shut on it" when the belt failed. I can't quite remember exactly what he said. But he does mention opening it up and taking it to a machine shop. It's running right now but the 4th cylinder is functioning. Does that make any sense? Thanks again!

Yes a bent valve will still alow engine to run with slight miss and down on power. When belt brakes the valves stop moving the pistons keep moving striking the valve bending.

That sounds about right. They did replace the belt and said it still runs, not perfectly, but ok. He wouldn't recommend any long road trips until I have it fixed or choose to get rid of it. If I can get it repaired for under $1200-$1500, I think I'll go for it and, hopefully, get another year or so out of the car. Thanks for all your feedback.
