im looking into buying a rebuilt transmission for my car and i was told somewhere that the code on the transmission matters (mines a DFQ) but then the guy selling the transmission told me that dose not matter as long as it came from a 97 vw jetta 2.0 4cl (which my car is and it came from). Also he stated that when in reverse the transmission makes alot of noise but dose not pop out of gear and all the other gears run great with no noise. So the questions i have is it true as long as it came from a 97 vw jetta that it will also work in my 97 vw jetta? and is the loud noise meaning that the transmission is going out?

It shouldn't be a problem. Just make sure everything looks the same. If I recall, there were no mid year changes.

Let me know if you have other questions.
