1996 Volkswagen GTI P-Code 0501: Speed Sensor Performance

I have this P0501 code. I have replaced the speedometer transmitter that attaches to the speedometer drive on the A/T, but that has not resolved it. Also, my speedometer does not work, or only works once in a great while. What would be the prudent thing to do next?

There are a few engine variants and I would like to know the exact model to be able to get the correct data.
2.0L, 2.8L or TDI?

The cause of problem should be speed sensor or its wiing circuit and special tools would be required for testing. If the speedometer is faulty, there would be no code.

My engine is a 2.0 L. I changed the speedometer transmitter already, but that has not resolved the problem with the speedometer not working.

You need to check the speed sensor signal which requires special scanners. Is your scanner capable of testing engine electronics etc? SPEEDOMETER VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (VSS) SIGNAL, CHECKING Special tools, testers and auxiliary items VAG 1551/1552 scan tool with VAG 1551/3 adapter cable Multimeter (Fluke 83 or equivalent) Connector test kit VW 1594 Wiring diagram We shall check the voltage first if you don't have the necessary scanner. Disconnect 3-pin connector from vehicle speed sensor -1-. Turn on ignition.

Connect multimeter using test leads from VW 1594 to measure voltage at terminals 1 and 3 of connector. Specification: 9-14.5 volts Turn off ignition. Reconnect connector If no voltage was present: Check wiring.
