I was driving along on Sunday when suddenly I couldn't get it into gear.

Called a recovery man who thought it was hydraulic. Mechanic said very rare to just go with no prior indications.

Took to VW garage who say likely clutch - £293 to strip and if it is over £1000 to fix.

Is this likely? What sort of questions should I be asking? Thank you.

Hi there, first question for me.... Do you still have good pedal pressure?

The pedal did not go floppy at all. It has always been slightly soft. I pulled out of a junction, got up to 3rd, went to change down at a roundabout and it had gone.

VW say they have stripped the engine down and the friction plate is worn due to my driving. I've been driving for nearly 30 years, have had cars that have gone over 100k and never had a clutch go. I am a careful driver.

They keep saying its gone. We keep saying why after only 38k. Other mechanics say must be defect but hard to prove. If we don't have it repaired with them, they will invalidate our warranty which doesn't run out until end of May. Totally devastated.

Hi there,

This is where they have you over a barrel, with good pedal pressure i would have been thinking the same, that the clutch plate has failed, now for this to happen at this distance is some what unusual, but these things do happen, the clutch needs replacing regardless, so you have to weigh up the cost of having them do it to maintain the warranty for the next few months, or get it done elsewhere maybe cheaper and void the warranty... this is a choice only you can make.
