my warning light has come on on my car, have not taken it to a dealer yet as i have only just noticed it. the car runs fine so what could it be?

This is a visual indication that there is a set fault code in the diagnostic system, you will have to get a scan done to read this code, the code will indicate where the problem is, you dealer will do this scan for you.
