2003 Volkswagen Golf Center console

I need to change a broken plastic console and have the replacment parts, including metal pieces to anchor the console to the floor. My question is how do i do the replacment? How to take apart the floor and/or the base where the hand brake lever is? Do I pull up the floor mat, disassemble the console, snap off some plastic part?
