Engine Mechanical problem
1998 Volkswagen Golf Engine Size unknown Wheel Drive Type unknown Manual 86,000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
Hi,

I have a '98 VW Golf and the pistol rings are going in the engine. I have been advised to purchase a reconditioned engine instead of replacing the pistol rings. Could you advise where I could purchase this or is this the best route?

Many thanks for your time

Are you doing the work?

IF a shop is doing it, let them handle it. Warranties on engines can turn into a nightmare if something goes wrong after installation. Professional installation is usually required. Labor to do it a second time even if the manufactuing company screwed up may not be paid unless it was done professionally.

Ask explicitly about the warranty situation and if FULL labor will be covered if something happens. Ask what will come out of your pocket basically.

No Im not doing the work, a garage told me the problem a while back so I know its only a matter of time before the rings go. The garage didnt suggest finding me the engine, so I thought the best / cheapest route was to find an engine myself and then get a mechanic to install.

So I gather from your answer the best route for me is to go through a garage from finding the engine to installing and then getting a warranty from them?
