1997 Volkswagen Golf reverse gear

when I put my veh into reverse gear nothing happens, no noise etc, but if I give it a bit of gas at about 2000 rpm the veh goes into reverse. Also of note all forward gears are working fine

Very common failure on these cars. Sometimes checking and topping off the transmission fluid helps, but usually requires a new/rebuilt transmission to solve.

There is a trick to increase line pressure, but the fluid pan needs to be removed and a specialized torx bit is needed to adjust the screw. This is just going to buy more time, as the damage/wear has already been done.
