Engine Cooling problem
1994 Volkswagen Golf 4 cyl Automatic 272000 km

My car suddenly began over heating about 1 month ago and I took it to a mechanic who dissembled the cooling system, radiator, thermostat and eventually decided it was something to do with the Head gasket. This was repaired and a new thermostat and breather installed however the car is still overheating and am afraid to drive it as the temperature occasionally goes from cold to 110 degrees + in a matter of minutes after starting. I have been told to keep an eye on it and return it in a 1000km. I have the car back now but the mechanic had the car for a total of 15 day and I am not satisfied with their response, they keep advising me that they are waiting on a reply from VW as to possible reasons why it is still doing this.....Can you shed some light on this problem?

Hi there,

This may be a blocked radiator, get it professionally cleaned & flow tested, was the water pump replaced? and re check for a faulty new thermostat, start here.

Could also be airlock in the cooling system-Try bleeding it-

Always bleed air from cooling system after replacing coolant. Set heater for maximum heat. Remove radiator cap. Loosen drain plug and remove drain bolt (if equipped) from engine block. Drain coolant reservoir. Fill coolant reservoir to MAX mark with 50/50 water-coolant mixture. Loosen bleed bolt and fill radiator up to base of filler neck. Close bleed bolt when coolant flows out without bubbles. Tighten bleed bolt. With radiator cap removed, start and operate engine to normal operating temperature. Add coolant if necessary and check for leaks.
