2005 Volkswagen Beetle air filter location

The air filter for the engine is located just rear of the battery under the hood (on the right side of the engine compartment). Loosen the two phillps screws on the rear of the plastic filter box cover and pull up on the back. Bias the cover to the rear to disengage the front retainers. Remove the old filter and install the new one. Re-engage the front retainers and close the cover. Be careful not to over-tighten the two phillip screws in the rear of the cover.
