I took my car to Jiffy Lube today to have my air conditioning system serviced. I was told that I needed to take my car to a mechanic because the compressor "wouldn't open". What does that mean? Am I looking at having to buy a new compressor?

The only thing I can think of by "wouldn't open" is they couldn't get the cap off of one of the service ports. You may want to contact them and ask them to clarify. Let us know

I talked to the Jiffy Lube Mechanic today and they told me that what they do is vacuum out the system and then add freon (in my case 1.5lbs). They said when they did this the compressor was not coming on, but he did not know why. Does this help?

Forgive me. I sent you a response, but apparently it didn't post.
There are 4 things that will keep your AC compressor from coming on. I'll list them as most probable first.
Fuse
Compressor relay
Low pressure cutout
Control switch on the dash.
Note; The compressor should run in the "defrost" mode on the selector switch.
