I hear a loud ticking in the engine while idling at a stop.
My New Beetle was running very, very well. I used to warm it up. I'd let the engine idle, warm weather or cold, until the blue temp icon on the dash blinked out.
Then I would drive off. I thought I was doing good.
When I cranked my Beetle one morning, it did not start. I called AAA, and the tow truck driver diagnosed the problem quickly as a bad alternator. My battery was drained. When he jump-started the car, he didn't see the expected voltage across the alternator terminals.
So, I took my V-dub into an authorized dealer, certified mechanics and e'thing, and I wrapped all the work up into the 40k mile service.
To replace the battery and give me a new alternator, it cost me about $1,600.
Now, a couple of months later, I hear a loud ticking in the engine while idling at a stop. It sounds like a valve, because a friend, a long time ago, heard the same sound in his 2.0 engine and he said is was a valve. Or valve stem, or rod, something like that.
