2000 Volkswagen Beetle 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 100k miles

failing inspection with a p0422 fault code ---mechanic says cat converter needs replacement---any other solutions?---also are there any good after market cat converters that will work and are not as expensive as a dealer vw type?

In my workshop we have found a lot of the time that the converter is faulty, it is common to see this problem. What we find is the down stream o2 sensor is also a concern, replace the converter, yes they are very costly from the dealer, i find good quality after market work fine,i would also replace both o2 sensors, as these do fail as well and have a limited life span, then get the fault codes cleared from the ECU.
