1974 Volkswagen Beetle backup lights

I recently purchased a '74 super beetle. Unfortunately, the backup indicators are failing to illuminate. I have already checked the electrical circuit and found no problems. I believe that whatever presses the switch is either broken or worn.

Does this repair call for a complete tear down of the trans-axle; or, is it fairly simple? Also what parts will I need?

I had the same problem with my 73 super beetle. There is an in-line fuse in the engine compartment that connects to the reverse gear when engaged (on top of the transmission). This should be an 8 amp fuse, and you should be able to find it either around the intake or on top of the transmission.
This fixed my problem, I hope it helps you out.

The wire going to the back up light switch is hot when the ignition is on. Check for voltage going to the switch. Then check for voltage coming out of the switch when you put the car in reverse. If you have juice going in and don't have any coming out then the switch is bad. I don't see a fuse by the transmission. Also check the connections going to and from the switch. Just a little corrosion can prevent the switch or lights from getting current.

I tried locating the reverse light switch on the Transmission, I couldn't find it. I see the starter, clutch adjuster but no switch. Can anyone help me in locating? 1974 Super beetle. Sun bug. Thank you, phil

Fuse was bad. Located in the rear engine compartment near the coil. Thank you
