1973 Volkswagen Beetle Automatic

Have a Trike built with a VW engine and it has no engine code below the generator stand on the block. How can i tell which engine is in my trike. I need this info when purchasing parts. THANKS

Hi there,

I would say that you have an industrial version, as all automotive engines will have the engine code stamped on the engine case, i feel it will be a 1600, can you tell me how many notches on the pulley for timing the engine?this may be a clue.

has one mark on pulley.....bottom right of engine case reads 2BR BRAZIL....thanks

Hi there,

I spoke to a few VW people and they feel its a twin port 1600, most externals are the same but if you are doing a re build just measure the bores for the correct engine size, no one has cone across that I.D. so it is a bit of a mystery.
