1972 Volkswagen Beetle Trunk or Bonnet lid will not open

1972 Volkswagen Beetle 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

I just purchased this car, a 1972 VW Beetle. Prior to my purchase I open the trunk lid and had a hard time closing it, had to slam it real hard. Now I can not get it open. I have moved the lock in the glove box, have even push the glove box out and pulled on the cable with pliers with no luck. I have also push the lid from side to side, hit the handle with a rubber mallet, nothing works. Any ideas?

you will need two people to help you, you could not do it alone, have one person pulling the cable in and out, while the other person is trying open the hood, considering you slammed it instead of trying to realize why it would not close. You're going to have a hard time.
