Brake lights

Check your fuses, I cannot remember which one is the brake lights, but if you check your fuses, it will be obvious. Look for a break in the metal filament, sometimes a fuse will have popped out, most of them are 8 amp fuses, and cost like ten cents a piece.
There is also an in-line fuse on my 1973 Super Beetle for the reverse lights which is in the engine cavity behind the carburetor, and another in-line fuse under the back seat, but I do not know if your car has those also. It is helpful to have spare fuses in the car anyways, just in case.

Raise the front of the vehicle and remove the left front tire. Up under the wheel well is the master cylinder. Check each wire with a electrical tester. One side should have voltage going to it all the time unless a fuse is blown. The fuses that the car uses are the old ceramic ones. If you find voltage going in one side then have someone press on the brakes and then check the other wire to make sure voltage is coming out when brakes are pressed. If you have voltage going in and none coming out even when the brakes are applied the switch is bad. Some newer cars have a dual switch system and both switches have to be checked. With it being out in the open when the car is driven clean the wires on each side of the switch.
