I have a '97 Vectra Arctic - for the last few weeks the car has been making a whining noise when I've been accellerating. When I was parked up for a short time this evening after a long motorway journey the car made a noise that I can only describe as 'clunk' - I thought I'd been clipped by another vehicle. When I then started the engine the battery light was on and the steering became very heavy (no power steering at all).

I had been told that it was likely to be my alternator going - is this what's happened? And how much is this going to cost?
