Engine Light on Vauxhall 1.6 R Reg

Hi, We were just returning home from a 2 1/2 hour drive when the car stopped at a roundabout. All of the usual lights were displayed like the car had been stalled. I managed to restart it and now the orange engine light is on. There is no noise coming from the engine and there is no smoke etc. The car drove the rest of the way ok without any problems apart from the light. Any ideas as to what it could be?. We are leaving it to stand for a while.
