1997 Vauxhall Astra
----------------------------------------------------------------
I have a 1997 vauxhall astra. The engine keeps cutting out. And its getting worse and more frequent. After breaking down and totally flattening the battery last week from trying to restart it, I took it to the garage but they couldnt find any fault codes. I took it back and it died again after a few miles. So i took it back. They replaced the fuel filter, which has made a difference to the driving of the car - but its still cutting out. I have taken it back to them everyday for 4 days, and eventually they agreed to just drive it until it did it to them - but it didnt cut out on them!! It happens in busy traffic, when the engine temp is up. Nice drives in the country dont affect it.
I drove it yesterday in terrible traffic and it was just about ok. It started to drop revs when idle, and so i stuck the heat on full to cool the engine. This seemed to help things. Today, we wernt in that bad traffic, but the revs started to go, and then it cut out. I started the engine, and put the heat on, and the engine temp went down and it was ok then. (although, i was actually moving again by then)
I have read about this and there are so many things that apparently it could be (crank shaft sensor, throttle body, idle control valve etc etc etc) But i cant afford to replace everything id 'might' be. There must be a way of finding out! The garage say the only way is for them to experience it cutting out on them. - so what? i have to take it to them daily until it happens? I would love to get shot of it, but i cant sell it with a fault. If you can help at all i would be so greatful.

I would start by replacing the CKP (crankshaft postition sensor) a common fault on this make of vehicle !
