Truck will not start without starting fluid

Hold on a second. First off, is this a diesel? I know that some NPR's have gas engines but most I have seen are diesels. If so, please do not use any more starting fluid on it. It is dangerous and could seriously damage the engine. In the meantime let me see if II can look up some things on your vehicle before I comment. I just wanted to make sure you stopped using ether if you had a diesel!

While I am looking around, can you tell me a little more? Was there anything you did, or anything that happened just prior to this problem?

1. Have you checked the the fuel rail pressure?
2. Is there water in the fuel?
3. Can you hear the fuel injectors clicking when you crank?
4. Are there any trouble codes that you can share with us?

It sounds like the auxiliary pump which feeds the main pump is out. Turn the key to the on position and place your hand on the pump to see if it is working. If so the main pump can be out. Here are diagrams to show you the location and what you are in for when doing the job.
