Truck cranks over but will not actually start up

So this truck went down on my uncle about 5 months ago, he didn't know why so with living in a rural location and no mechanic truck has sat. Anyhow, I'm trying to help him get it back running. So the truck is cranking over but doesn't start up. The fuel pump sounds like it's going when I turn the key. I did take out the carburetor filter on the right side and sprayed some gas in . It started to crank over and run but wont stay running. Only when I squeeze some fuel in the truck will run as soon as the fuel evaporates until shut off. Is there any idea what might be the problem?

Hello,

This definitely sounds like it is fuel related. Okay,so the pump starts up when the key is cycled on to prime the system. I would recommend first changing the fuel filter. In the diagrams down below I have included the Original Equipment Manufacturers part number for the fuel filter as well as the instructions for the removal and installation of the fuel filter for your vehicle. Please go through these guides and report back on how everything goes. We can go from there if needed.

Thank you very much. I'll do this first. on another note how do I release fuel pressure if the truck wont even turn over all the way? Is it possible to go ahead and just replace the filter without? Just curious.

Hello again,

The engine does not need to start to get the fuel pressure relieved. The fuel pump will be deactivated, so what fuel is in the fuel lines will be relieved through the fuel injectors with no more fuel from the pump to take its place.
