So I am having a problem with the theft deterrent system. I have tried to reset it with no good result. Here's the thing I swapped engine from a 3 speed to a 4 speed with the wiring harness for under the hood the system was bypassed on my computer but this one is not. How would I bypass it again when I have already bypassed it once?

Hi,

I don't see how the immobilizer can be bypassed. If you let the key in the on position for approx 10 minutes, does the security light turn off, and then the vehicle will start?

Okay. The best I'm going to be able to do is provide the wiring schematic for the entire powertrain management. Since you changed the type of transmission and the harness, I have nothing to reference here.

First, here is a link you may find helpful:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-wiring

If you look at the attachments, I included the wiring schematics for the powertrain management. I had to cut the pics in half to make them readable. However, I did overlap them so you can follow from one to the next.

I hope this helps. Honestly, not being there and not seeing what was changed and done makes this difficult. Plus, I have no specific reference tools for what was done.

Take care,

Joe

I had a 2.2, 3 speed automatic in my 1999 Cavalier I took that out and put a 2.2 4 speed automatic from a 2001 Cavalier in it had to take the wiring harness because it has a plug that plugs into the front of the engine everything is hooked up. I just can't get passed the theft deterrent. Thank you for your help it is very much appreciated.

I attached the anti-theft schematics below. Is there any reason that the key wouldn't be recognized by the passlock? Also, check to see if there is a 5v reference to the passlock cylinder via the white wire. Also, confirm continuity to ground via the black wire.

Explain what procedure you used to reset the anti-theft.

A couple of years ago I replaced the ignition but I bypassed it by cutting the yellow wire and it ran fine. Then I changed everything I am pretty sure that the car I got the engine out of it wasn't bypassed not sure if that makes a difference. The white wire only read 2.8 volts. I have turn the key on 10 minutes then off turn back on for 10 more minutes back off then back on for 10 more minutes.

If the new wiring harness hasn't been changed, then the passkey is likely not communicating for it to start. It sounds like you are doing the 30 minute relearn. If any codes are still present in the PCM, the relearn won't work. Make sure they are all cleared first.

It didn't work. I clear the codes and the first time I turn the key off to on the check engine light comes on I'm assuming the u1000 code is popping up whatever that is.

Hi,

The U1000 basically indicates the control module is not receiving signals from other modules. Take a look through the two pics I attached. Let me know if that helps you or if you have other questions.

So it could be the theft system.

Yes, it could actually, the code will be set by any module that isn't communicating with the control module. Since this is related to the anti-theft, the problem is likely related to the theft deterrent module. A signal from it isn't being received by the control module.

This is where I start to get lost because of the changes that were made and the wiring harness changes to compensate for a different transmission. Was anything changed as far as the PCM? Did you change keys, ignitions, or anything other? You mentioned you bypassed it once. What did you bypass?

Let me know.

The big plug drivers side I unplugged that and plugged the other one in. And I by passed the theft system by cutting the yellow wire.

The yellow wire is for the Magnetic Resonance Device (MRD). That is the input for it. If you have that wire cut, the pass lock is not signaling the control module which is likely the cause of the U1000. What happens if you reconnect that wire?

Did you change the ignition lock or anything? The 1626 indicates the body control module isn't enabling the fuel circuit (anti-theft/key not recognized) 1630 indicates the PCM is in the password learn mode, and 1632 indicates the PCM has received a fuel cut-off password from the BCM or an undecided password which could mean there is no communication.

The problem could be the switch/passkey, something different in the new harness, a faulty body control module, faulty PCM, and so on.

I have one last thing to try. Disconnect the battery. Take a zip tie and clamp the pos and neg battery cables together. Let them sit like that for about 30 minutes. This will discharge any capacitors which may be holding power. Hopefully, it will reset the BCM and change things.

Let me know.

Yeah, it didn't do anything different. I think I'm going to change the BCM.

That may take care of it. Did you try the battery trick?

When you remove it, make sure to inspect connections and the ground. See the pic below for ground location.

Let me know.

So I found this (see attachment) but it says ABS and the plugs are different so I don't think it's it.

Hi,

No, that isn't it. It should be under the dash on the left side.

So every video I watch and everything I read shows me that the BCM is behind the fuse box and back a little bit. That ABS thing I showed you is where the BCM should be, so I am a little bit confused about that.

Could it be in the ABS thing? I think I read somewhere that it's a EBCM the ABS is built into it.

Hi,

That is possible. I attached two pics below from the manual. One indicates the BCM and the other the EBCM. They look like they are in the same place.

Yeah, they are so I guess I change the rest of the wiring out then I shouldn't have a problem hopefully.

If you have a chance, let me know how things work out for you. I'm interested in knowing. Also, I wish I could have been more helpful, but when things get changed, it really makes it a challenge when the vehicle isn't in front of you. I hope that makes sense.

Regardless, let me know.

Take care,

So question: if the theft system was tripped on the other car and then I swapped everything would it be stuck in theft mode?

No. Once power is disconnected for an extended period of time, that shouldn't be an issue. Also, even if it was tripped, it should reset.

Let me know how things are going for you.
