My car has been having transmission problems today check engine light came on. diagnostic showed trouble code p1890. is this serious?

It is not serious when it starts however, what it means is inside the CVT transmission the steel belt is slipping. This means that the RPM will increase but the speed does not.
The way the CVT works is there is a steel belt inside it that as the RPMs raise to go faster the pulley diameter inside the transmission changes so that the speed of the output shaft increases with no shifting gears.
In short, I would have this addressed sooner than later but it is not something that must be done tonight. It will progressively get worse until the vehicle doesn't move any longer. There is no way of knowing when that may be. Could be a day or a year or longer. That is why I would make arrangements to take care of it before that happens.
