Transmission not shifting properly

Whenever transmission light is on in dash, it will no longer automatically shift from one gear to another. In this mode I can still shift gears manually.

There is a fault code stored for this in the system.

Can you take it to a parts store and have them read the code so I can narrow the area of failure.
