I was driving my truck that is listed above (HD) down the road when the truck started to slow down. I pressed the accelerator and the RPM's went up but the truck speed did not react. I pulled over and when I went to put the truck it park, it made a whining/grinding sound. I shut off the truck in neutral and towed it home. The truck will crank, and you can shift through the gears but it will not engage anything, it is like it is stuck in neutral. But when you shift into park, the shifter moves but it makes this whining/grinding sound and will not engage into park. While in park, if you rev up the engine, the whining and grinding react with the RPM's but nothing ever happens. Is this the torque converter that has gone out or something else? Also the four wheel drive will not engage. You can hear the solenoid actuating and clicking but it never locks in either. Fluids are good, and it was driving and shifting fine up until this point. There was no indication of any issues, it just quit.

Hello,

It sounds like the rear differential has failed. We can confirm this by looking under the truck to see if the drive shaft is turning when truck is in gear. This will take two people, never stand in front or rear of the truck when checking.

Please let us know what happens.

Cheers, Ken

The drive shaft is not turning when the truck is put into gear. I also would not think that the rear differential failing would cause the whining noise when putting into park. I would think the noise would follow all the gears if that were the case.

It sounds like something is broken. I assumed it was the rear differential because it would allow the driveshaft to spin causing a noise when you put it into park. Is there a change you can make a short video with a phone of the noise and upload it in your response?

Also, can we run the codes to see what comes up?

Might help by telling us something.

I can take a video this evening and upload it. I have checked the codes a few times and there are none pertaining to my issue. One for the O2 sensor and one for the fuel gauge (it is currently broken at the moment).

I am thinking something inside the transmission broke like an output shaft. Raise the back of the truck up so the tires spin. Put the transmission in park and see if you can move the driveshaft?

You will need to jack the truck up.
