I had the transmission replace 2 years ago. now sometimes it shifts well and other times it doesn't.

Does it have an input and output speed sensor on the transmission?

Where is it located?

Vehicle listed above is the SLT model.

Good morning,

I attached a diagram for you to view for the sensors on the outside of the case.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/automatic-transmission-problems

When was the last time you changed the fluid and filter? A partially clogged filter could cause this issue.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/replace-cv-axle

If it was one of the sensors, it would set a code. Do you have any codes set?

Thanks for responding. I just had this transmission replaced 2 years ago. The fluid looks new and it doesn't smell burnt. I can drive it to town stop at the red light then take off and it won't change unless I let off the gas. and then the next couple miles it does great, the check engine light comes on and like 10 minutes later it goes off.

Okay, thanks.

I would still consider changing the fluid and filter as it is a once a year service anyway and it sounds like you are a year behind.

You need to get the code checked. A parts store will read it for you for free. That will help me narrow the area of failure.

Can't find the vss on the transmission. Bought a VSS per application and followed online diagrams and instructions. But there is nothing there that resembles what I purchased.

Update:
I saw another post stating that the Speed sensor was on the rear diff. So I returned the Transmission Speed sensor and purchased the rear differential speed sensor. Changed it but it didn't solve the speedometer and ABS light issue that I've been having.

Hello,

Is your vehicle's Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or "check engine" lamp illuminated?

Thanks,
Alex

Hello again,

Okay I'm not sure if you are needing to know where the Output Speed Sensor or the Wheel Speed Sensor so I have included printed descriptions of where each sensor is located as well as diagrams for both of them in the diagrams down below. Please go through these guides and get back to us with how everything turns out.

Thanks,
Alex

Thanks for your assistance. But I have a manual transmission. I noticed these images are for automatic transmission. Would that make any difference.
I was looking for the output speed sensor since my speedometer want working and had the P500 code.
But I cannot find anything that resembles an output speed sensor on the transmission.

Hello again,

Can you please get the date of manufacture from the inside of your vehicle's door jamb. Both of my reference materials list no option for a manual transmission on a 1999 Dodge Dakota with a 5.9L power plant, only an automatic.

Thanks,
Alex

Production date is 10/98.
But it's a 5.2L not 5.9.

Hi Alex,
Thanks for all your efforts.
That's where the application took me too also, but it isn't there.
That's when I checked this site and saw a post where someone mentioned it being the differential speed sensor. So I changed that speed sensor and nothing changed. The problems are still there.
I hope someone can assist me with my issue.

Thanks Darwin

Hey jr,
Yup, common problem in those trucks....its the sensor on the top of the rear differential.

Hello again,

Okay, I don't know why I didn't do this earlier but I have just included the diagnostic troubleshooting guide from the vehicle manufacturer for DTC P0500. Please go through this guide, find the problem, fix it, and report back with what you find out.

Thanks,
Alex

For a 3.9--4wd--man, that diagram is what MOD showed. I'll keep looking. I couldn't get your link to work? If you stay on the original post, it is less confusing. Might you be talking about a wheel speed sensor?

Sometimes these databases aren't correct. I looked at some more info, it says no vss. Check rear wheel speed sensor. That sensor sends signal to abs, abs sends signal to pcm, pcm sends signal for speed. I'll try to double check. The databases are all I have to go by.
