Transmission range sensor

This is a transmission range switch fault code and it could possibly be due to poor or bad connections or a faulty switch. Switch is located on top of transmission and is where the gear shift cable is attached to.

This switch fails quite often due to water entry via the center seal so having a bad switch is not surprising.

It should look something like the one in the picture. Check the connector for contamination, looseness or broken wires. Ensure the cable that is attached does not have too much free play which would affect the resting position of the switch as compared to the gear shift position.

Replacing this component is not difficult but after replacement you would need to calibrate its position so that it matches the gear shift position. The two holding bolts have slots that allow the switch to be moved clockwise or anticlockwise to get the correct adjustment.

The diagram I have shown is general and if you do not see the switch on top of transmission, it could be at front. Locate the gear shift cable to trace it to its location.

that would be the mode switch located on the side of the transmission. The basics are that you disconnect the battery, Remove the shift linkage nut and the lever from the trans shift shaft. Then remove the two bolts and the switch, unplug the electrical connector and reverse the process to install the replacement.

My switch doesn't look anything like this one and it does not have a cable attached, except on the other side of the transmission (driver side). Still cannot find the correct switch!

What vehicle do you have and what is the fault? The switch I refer to is on the drivers side and the cable that moves the shift lever on the transmission also moves the range switch.
