Transmission problems

When leaving my house today, my van was doing great, shifting all the gears and everything. I got maybe four miles from my house and it was like the van kicked out of gear. I turned the van off for approximately ten minutes and started it back up, it did the same thing, switched gears perfectly then suddenly kicked out. Any ideas on what this could be.

What do you mean by "kicked out?" Would it not move at all? Or was it only going up to like thirty mph? If it is the second thing, that is called "limp mode." Limp mode occurs when the transmission computer detects an issue and, in order to prevent further damage, disables certain functions and leaves it so you can "limp" to the mechanic. You should get it to a transmission shop and have them scan it. Aamco is usually offering a free diagnostic if you tell them that AutoZone sent you. At least they do that here.

By "kicked out" it will not do anything, it is like it is in park. it will not even go in reverse. But if you cut it off and restart it after a few minutes it pulls good again for about a mile or so.

Well I would be guessing here, but I would bet that your fluid pressure is dropping too low and then the solenoids and clutches cannot do what they need to do. This could be happening if you have a very dirty filter, or if the screen in the transmission fluid pump is clogged. Do you know when the last time was that the transmission was serviced (fluid changed and new filter installed)?

Figured it out, it was the filter, took the filter off it was completely stopped up...replaced it along with the gasket and so far ot seems to be running good

Yeah, after asking ten different mechanics and getting different responses I figured heck with it I would try that first and then go with everything else that was mentioned...which most mechanics I asked said either solenoids or sensors or that it needed rebuilt
