Transmission problem

My car just stalled while driving. when I tried to engage drive it takes like five second, jerks and stops. Had to tow it home. what could be the problem?

Does it feel like a manual transmission if you were to pop the clutch? If so, it sounds related to the torque converter. Check to see if there are trouble codes stored.
