Transmission not shifting properly

I have to shift my car from 2 then when it shift I can put it in D sometimes it shifts some times it does not. cannot go over 40 mph

it kind of sounds like it is in limp mode so have a transmission guy scan for codes on this one this can be an internal problem of transmission or electrical but transmission people can give a better diagnosis
