Transmission not shifting past first and engine light on

I'm driving my car all of a sudden I felt this little kind of like different speed in the transmission, then it kind of had little surge to it like I was going to shut off but it didn't. Also the speedometer went to zero and the transmission only shifts in first. what can it be?

Hi,

The idea that the speedometer went to 0 leads me to believe the output speed sensor may have failed. That would cause both of the things to happen.

I attached a pic of the sensor. It is mounted on the transmission and isn't hard to replace. However, the only way I can confirm it is bad or the cause is if you had the computer scanned to see if there are diagnostic trouble codes related.

Regardless, locate the sensor and make sure the wiring to it is in good condition and the connector is tight. If that checks good, then I'm going to suggest replacing the sensor unless you can have the computer scanned.
