When I'm driving my car, it feels like the brakes are grabbing at 40 and 20 km, I know it's not my brakes. I let the car get up to 50 and put it in neutral and didn't have that same feel like the brakes were grabbing.

It sounds like the transmission is not shifting. We should run the codes to see what comes up. Can you tell if the engine is revving higher than it should?

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/checking-a-service-engine-soon-or-check-engine-light-on-or-flashing

Codes reader are inexpression now about $30.00 on Amazon. Can you please shoot a quick video with your phone so I can hear the engine noise? That way I can tell for sure what's going on. You can upload it here with your response. I would say the valve body may need replacement with a rebuilt or new unit. Just in case I have left the replacement instructions below. Please let me know what happens.

Thank you for responding. the engine seems like it's running normal right now it's raining out, but I can take up video after the only thing that I noticed besides with the transmission and the car feeling like it's being slowed down by the transmission when I'm slowing down at approximately 40 and 20 km an hour. your advice about the valve body could be possible. Is there anything else you need me to do besides take a video of the car running? I can do that, the only other thing I notice is that my gas mileage does not seem to be that good. I'm looking at 10 km/l and that my engine feels like it's pretty hot for just driving around a little bit, I would say maybe say 20 minutes to 30 minutes it seems extremely warm. I don't know if that would be any issues indicating anything again. Thank you and I will do whatever you suggest.

People are thinking that it might be a downshift but I'm not too sure. I've been driving stick shift for the last few years and just moved to this automatic about a month ago. I don't know if this is normal or not, but it doesn't feel normal to me.

One thing also concerning my gas mileage, this picture shows a circle with a cross through it where my gas says 9.3 L per 100 km can you tell me if you think that's right, and can you tell me what that circle is with the cross through means if possible?

I've been driving the car a bit more and I think I'd come to understand that what I'm feeling is just the gears slowing down from like third to second to 1. I'm just not used to it because I'm used to driving manual any other information you have to offer as in the circle with the cross through or if I'm actually getting good gas mileage would be helpful though. Do you think that's also what the problem the issue is just the gears slowing down as I'm letting the car coast?

Thanks for the videos and images. Did you get a chance to run the codes? This seems like you have a problem with the car's PCM. That's why there is a zero with a line through it. You can get a CAN scanner from Amazon for about $30.00.

Here is a video to show you how:

Here is a scanner link:

This will tell us for sure what's going on.

Hi Ken, it's Nathan again. I just had a reader plugged in and there was no code stored in it. I will still look to do a bit of homework on what that circle with the line means, but I'm not sure what's going on with my car, it just doesn't feel like it's running 100%. it could be me and the fact that I'm used to driving a manual. I'm at a bit of a loss to figure out what's going on with my car, I mean with the gas mileage I must be getting 10 km/l I don't know. Anything you could just suggest, or you need me to check out I can do. Thanks again for your input.

Yeah, I just did a bit of research and I think it means the circle with the line through it is European and it means average. I don't know if that's for sure but that's what I've come to know. I still don't know why I'm getting terrible gas mileage. Any help?

Okay, that makes sense, so this car has a MAF sensor that can be dirty was causing it to be off and tells the computer to dump too much fuel into the engine. Here is the location so you can replace it. Also make sure the tires have enough air in them. Also change out the air filter, it is dirty. Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what happens.

Hi Ken, I went out to my car, and I started it up open the hood, unplugged the MAF electrical connection and the car didn't turn off and then when I plugged it back in it the engine light came on, the code p-0097, p-0102. From those codes I think it suggests that I need to get installed a new MAF sensor. I got two other codes one was 60300 and the other one was negative 12,000,2 times for last code. The first two like I said suggest an MAF replacement for the other codes I do not have an idea. I did try cleaning the sensor I had no other luck. I was wondering if there was a way to reset the MAF to see if it is working or if I should just go ahead and get a replacement sensor, I'm still getting bad gas mileage.

Also, when I did take off the sensor the wires were pretty dirty, I cleaned with isopropanol and a Q-tip and then let it dry in the sun for over an hour before replacing.

From what I researched if you take the electrical connection off the MAF, and the car doesn't turn off then you need a new MAF sensor. also, I was just at my car today and there's no more engine light, not to sure.

Yep, once the sensor gets to a point cleaning will not help it, also, when the sensor is unplugged, the computer will substitute a default value which might be better than what the MAF sensor is outputting.

I'm curious, I've been doing a little research and I found that you can buy an OB D2 scanner/reader. Do you think that it would be worthwhile to have hooked up to my car?

Yep, anytime you have car problems it helps to have a scanner which is inexpensive now. Click on the link above, I would get a CAN scanner because it does the entire car system.

Hi Ken, Nathan again, that mass air flow sensor did the trick, the car is running really good. Now I'm getting about approximately 11 km per liter. I mean it's not a lot better but a little better. I was just curious if you thought that was fair or not, again thank you for all your help.

It does sound like the mileage is okay, I would fill the tires to the maximin pressure which will be on the side of the tire. This should get you a little better mileage.

Please go over this guide and report back.
