Code 56C0, transmission is not shifting properly

I removed the throttle body to see if the selector valve is broken but it is not. The seals all look good. I also forgot to mention something. Whenever i put it in reverse and hit the pedal i hear a loud noise from the front differential and the rear wheels only move an inch or so and struggle. If the front differential is bad or locked or jammed will that prevent the car from going into reverse or blocks the wheels from moving?

I suspect you saw the attached TSB which is why you inspected the selector valve.

However, the TSB has been updated in 2012 that still points to a selector valve, but it is saying that the dealer needs to submit a ticket to their help desk so that they can evaluate for a transmission replacement.

From what I can tell the dealers were finding the same thing that you did which is it has these codes, but the selector was not broken.

At which point it appears they are replacing the transmission.

This would match what you are seeing where the wheels don't move much.

The only alternative that I see is to rebuild the unit but unfortunately, they don't list any info on these codes that would point to a specific cause to look for when inside the unit. Which means I would think we will see the obvious issue once it is apart.

Based on this info and codes, this is the direction I would be going.

Good question. This was written for the dealership specifically as they have an online system to submit these. I do not know of a way for people outside the dealer to do this.

You may be able to call the BMW hotline and talk to them about this as they may have an internal process to help owners. However, they may tell you to just go to a dealer and have them submit it.

We called and they said it was not covered. We are going to sell it like it is. I can't even get it out of the garage. If I lift it up in the air and put it in reverse wheels don't move but move by hand, if I put it in neutral car goes forward, same for D. If I put it down and put it in reverse nothing happens and can't push it, neutral goes forward. If I turn it off and out it in reverse, neutral or D can't roll it back. just crazy.

Yeah. I understand. That is definitely sounds like an internal issue so it would be a jumping off point if you don't love the vehicle.
