I understand automatics are frustrating, I've been dealing with it for three weeks already. My car was shifting and driving fine to my college but when I came back from where I parked it the car showed a Emission System Check display on the screen as well as a check transmission light. We first started by flushing the transmission fluid out and using Honda only fluid, restarted power and found out that when driving the D transmission option started to blink and my car did not shift past third gear. I went to do those free diagnostic for AutoZone and got the error code (P0717-Input shaft main shaft speed sensor (no signal input) three times. Now we switched the speed sensor but still does the same thing. I've read in some forums that some get lucky and it's the speed sensor but my speedometer works perfectly fine. The other options were some pressure switches for the third and fourth gear but when I check online I can only find a oil pressure switch. The other option is an infamous software update but that might be too far off it the same day it was working and half day started acting up.

Which one? There is an input shaft speed sensor and an output shaft speed sensor. The input sensor is on the side of the transmission and monitors the main input shafts speed. The output shaft speed sensor is on top of the transmission.
What is the issue you are having?

Every time I put my car in drive and press on the gas it goes up slowly like if it was stuck in neutral. Is that a failing in the speed sensor?

Oh yes, they can cause that so can low fluid level. We should run the codes to see what is going on. Here is a guide to help us get started and the sensor location in the transmission so you can check it out:

Here is a video of one getting changed:

Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is.

Cheers, Ken

2000 Honda Civic

I have 2000 Honda civic and I disconnected the speed sensor down by the transmission when I was working on it. I accidently left it disconnect for a couple months and when I connect it back the speedo didt work, could it be that u have to erase the CEL with one of those code scanners??
Thanks ahead of time for your answer

Hi there,

First thing to do us check that the pins are not corroded and dirty from being uncovered this may just need a good clean up in the plug pins.

I'm attempting to install a new transmission speed sensor but the three small screws that hold it in place are impossible to remove. I've tried drenching them with anti-rust spray but they still won't budge. I can't use a ratchet because they have rounded heads. I'm at a standstill because I'm afraid I might strip the heads with a philips head screwdriver if I continue. Does anyone have a tip or suggestion that I can use? Thank you.

When I bought this car, I had non Honda alarm system by VIPER installed. As the years went on, the alarm stopped working. So I went back to the alarm dealer about five years ago and told them to disconnect it.
About two years ago, my check engine light came on and the (D) for drive began flashing.
My friend who is a mechanic said it was a transmission sensor and fixed it. It ran fine. But then a few months after he fixed it, it began doing this again.
He told me to shut the car off leave it for a day and it should stop doing it. It did. It stopped.
But every now and then it does the same thing. I recently noticed when it does this, the red light alarm instrument which is located on the console on the drivers side begins flashing wildly.
I am thinking that the alarm dealer never really disconnected the alarm or he did and there is a wire short under there that is perhaps throwing off the car computer because it does not check light and D flash all the time.
Is this possible? Also, my mechanic tells me he is nervous about completely disconnecting the alarm system due to the fact it might shut off the car completely? Can this happen?

The aftermarket alarm can easily be completely removed by any competent mechanic and that will answer all your questions about whether it is causing any issues.

Cannot rule anything out with electrical, but it is doubtful.

Thanks. True, but if it was a real transmission problem it would be happening all the time and not once and awhile right? See when I turned off the car today and left it for an hour when I went back out and started it the check engine light remained on but the D for Drive light stopped flashing and no problems shifting. the car drove fine. this has happened before. My mechanic friend would reset the computer and the check engine would go out. this is really strange.

It is not strange at all. The drive light flashes because the TCM has codes stored that need to be retrieved using an enhanced scan tool. It goes out because the problem is not constantly occurring. All you are doing when you reset the computer is to erase all that valuable diagnostic information that the engineers spent hours engineered into the computer to help find the problem. Unless you have a dealer level scan tool, someone else is going to have to do this.

Okay, but if it was truly a mechanical problem with the transmission it would be happening consistently and when the car would shut off and the flashing stops and the car rides fine wouldn't be happening if it was a genuine mechanical problem? do you think it could be a computer issue?

It sounds more like a sensor issue. There are two shaft speed sensors on the transmission did the mechanic replace both?

thanks for the reply. Yes he did. It was expensive. this issue does not happen all of the time. I would think that if this was a mechanical issue it would be happening all of the time. drove it today. the check engine light was on but it rode fine. I drove this care a whole year with the check engine light on and it was fine. when the car got inspected my mechanic friend resets and the CE light goes away. the last time I got it inspected was in April 2017.

Most of the time mechanical issues are constant this sounds like one of the sensors has gone bad did the mechanic use OEM parts?

Here is a video on how to replace the speed sensors.

Please let us know what happens.
